Chronic inflammation
Treating chronic inflammation largely prevents psychological complaints such as depression. We have written before that some forms of depression are an inflammatory response of the body that reaches the brain. The moment inflammatory reactions occur in the body, the byproducts of these reactions reach the brain and reduce the activity of serotonin (less stimulation of the 5-HT2a receptor). Reduced activity and levels of serotonin lead to depression, whereas serotonin typically provides a sense of contentment. In this way, the body attempts to signal the conscious brain that the individual must withdraw from the environment or situation that is unhealthy for them. Social withdrawal is also a natural protective mechanism for the survival of the species in cases where depression is caused by infectious disease.
Causes of inflammatory reactions
In today's world, we can trace most inflammatory responses back to poor nutrition (physical stress) and psychological stress. These are the two main causes of inflammatory responses. The image below shows even more factors that trigger stress and inflammatory responses.

Why psychological stress is also physical stress
The moment you have anxious thoughts, the body will exhibit a stress response. Through hormones, our brain will instruct the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, among other substances. Cortisol is delivered to every cell in our body via the blood and lymphatic systems. These cells then enter a state of readiness where having energy available to fight or flee is more important than cell health. Consequently, cells are unable to repair themselves, age faster, or become afflicted by chronic disease. The intestines are an example. As soon as there is a high level of cortisol in the blood, the pores of the intestines will open wider to absorb all possible energy from the intestinal contents. The downside of prioritizing having energy available to flee or fight is that substances, fungi, and bacteria that cause inflammatory reactions can also pass through the intestinal wall. This is called the leaky gut reaction, and prolonged stress can lead to chronic diseases.
