Before the LSD session is actually conducted, there is an intake procedure and preparation process. The LSD session itself consists of various phases to make the experience as safe and effective as possible. Here is an overview of what a typical LSD session looks like:
- Preparatory phaseAn introductory conversation takes place before the session. During this conversation, the therapist explains the structure of the day and discusses the participant's intentions and goals. This is a crucial moment to manage expectations and prepare the participant for what is to come.
- IntakeAs soon as the participant feels ready, the LSD (in the form of a legal analogue) can be taken. The therapist continues the conversation and monitors the goals.
- First effectsThe first effects may occur approximately 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion. This can range from visual disturbances to the emergence of various sensations. The facilitator helps the participant relax, which is essential for a positive experience.
- Peak of the experienceThe session reaches its peak approximately 60 to 90 minutes after ingestion. This is the moment when the most intense effects occur, and participants are encouraged to turn inward and explore their thoughts and feelings. This phase is therefore referred to as introspection.
- IntegrationAfter the peak, a period of diminishing effects follows, which can last an average of 8 hours, with an afterglow of approximately 4 hours. After the session, there is often an integrative conversation to discuss and process the experiences.
