What is the powdered drug DMC?
Dimethocaine is a synthetic local anesthetic that is structurally related to cocaine. Just like cocaine, it blocks the sodium channels in nerve cells, causing it to have anesthetic effects. Additionally, like cocaine, it inhibits the dopamine reuptake, which produces a stimulating, euphoric effect — although usually less strong than with cocaine. The full chemical name is 3-(diethylamino)-2,2-dimethylpropyl 4-aminobenzoate.
Dimethocaine works by:
Blockade of sodium ion channels, whereby nerve signals are temporarily not transmitted (numbing effect).
Dopamine reuptake inhibition (DAT inhibition), which leads to stimulation and increased alertness.
The effect often starts within 10–20 minutes and holds about 1 to 2 hours to, depending on the form of administration (oral, nasal, intravenous).
Users report:
Euphoria and increased energy
Increased self-confidence
Numbing sensation in the mouth or nose (similar to cocaine)
Short 'rush' followed by fatigue or irritability
Although Dimethocaine was legally sold as a “research chemical”, it is not safe for recreational use. Known risks:
Cardiovascular stress (increased heart rate, blood pressure)
Neurotoxicity with repeated use
Short duration → high redosing tendency
Chance of addiction, although slightly less than cocaine
Nausea, insomnia, and anxiety at higher doses
In the Netherlands is Dimethocaine currently not explicitly mentioned in the Opium Act, but can under the Medicines Act or the Economic Offences Act fall when it is offered for consumption. In many other countries (such as Germany and the UK), it is now banned as a designer drug, and it is expected that this substance will also soon be banned in the Netherlands.
dpDMC and meprylcaine are also substances like DMC. They attempt to mimic the effects of cocaine with these types of substances. It is still unknown whether it is more or less harmful than cocaine. We know nothing about it, especially regarding the long term. However, I do think that you experience downregulation regarding dopaminergic receptors. Therefore, it is not good for your mood, motivation, and addictive behavior in the long term.
Anything ending in Caine could be a coke analogue and will never be good for you to keep using. Maybe is Dimethocaine Fun for once, but watch out. You get addicted so quickly.
DMC, short for Dimethocaine, is a synthetic local anesthetic that is chemically very similar to cocaine. It blocks sodium channels in nerves, causing it to have an anesthetic effect, and also inhibits the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in stimulating and euphoric effects. The effects are therefore similar to cocaine but are generally weaker.
The duration of action is short, usually between 1 and 2 hours. Users experience euphoria, increased energy, self-confidence, and a numbing sensation at the site of ingestion. The problem is that the short duration of action often leads to redosing, which increases the risk of addiction.
In terms of health, DMC is not safe. It places significant stress on the heart due to increased heart rate and blood pressure. With regular use, it can be harmful to the nerves and impair the dopamine system, which negatively impacts mood, motivation, and addictive behavior in the long term. Furthermore, side effects such as nausea, insomnia, and anxiety may occur.
In the Netherlands, DMC is currently not explicitly prohibited, but this substance will likely soon fall under legal regulations. This is not a substance for regular use; even if you try it only once, you must be fully aware that the risk of addiction is very real. Anything ending in "caine" is not suitable for long-term use.
