MDMA is an illegal substance covered by the Opium Act. However, at Triptherapie, we use a legal alternative, namely an MDMA analogue. These analogues are substances that closely resemble MDMA and can produce similar therapeutic effects. Currently, these analogues are not illegal in the Netherlands and can be legally used during MDMA sessions or MDMA therapy. Although this treatment with MDMA analogues does not fall under medical treatments, they can be combined with psychotherapy or other forms of therapy. The combination of taking a substance similar to MDMA and the therapeutic context is then referred to as legal MDMA therapy. It is important to note that legislation and regulations regarding psychedelic therapy can vary by country. In the Netherlands, therapy with psychedelics is permitted, provided the substances are not listed in the Opium Act. Furthermore, therapy with psychedelics may not yet be performed on medical grounds, although, for example, psychedelic-assisted aromatherapy can be offered.
