How long before MDMA therapy should you stop using ketamine nasal spray?

Ketamine nasal sprays are often used for treatment-resistant depression. It primarily affects the glutamate balance in the brain via NMDA receptors. It works quickly, but the effects on mood and cognitive functioning can last for several days, as can the neurobiological aftermath. MDMA works very differently — it increases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, among others — and also affects the serotonin system for a long time.

Too short a period between the two substances can lead to an overload of your neurotransmitter system, which increases the risk of exhaustion, rebound depression, or unpredictable interactions. Extra caution is advised, especially if ketamine has been used for depressive symptoms.

The safest advice is to to wait at least 7 to 14 days between stopping ketamine nasal spray and MDMA therapy. This gives your brain sufficient time to stabilize and to prevent potential cross-tolerance. The exact period may vary per person, depending on frequency of use, the form of ketamine, dosage, and individual sensitivity. Therefore, we also recommend consulting a doctor or healthcare provider if in doubt, especially if the ketamine has been prescribed for a medical condition.

However, if you look at the half-life and not at recovery or powder tolerance, then you 'only' need to refrain from using ketamine for 60 hours before the psychedelic session with, for example, MDMA (also applies to LSD, psilocybin, DMT, etc.). After 60 hours, the amount of residual ketamine present is minimal.
