Why is a psilocybin session unwise if you are using Lithium?

Combining lithium with psychedelic substances can be very dangerous. Lithium in combination with psilocybin can lead to seizures/stroke. Furthermore, people use lithium for the treatment of bipolar disorder. The use of psychedelics is discouraged for bipolar disorder because, while it can reduce symptoms in some cases, it can worsen them in others. These two factors ensure that the use of lithium and psilocybin is strongly advised against.

A session with psilocybin is unwise and potentially dangerous if you use lithium, and this is explicitly advised against. The combination of lithium with psychedelics such as psilocybin can lead to serious side effects, including severe convulsions (seizures), confusion, and in rare cases even psychosis.

Lithium is one of the few medications where psychedelic sessions be absolutely ruled out as long as the substance is still present in the body. This has to do with the influence of lithium on the nervous system. Lithium affects the electrolyte balance and neuronal impulse conduction in the brain. If a psychedelic substance such as psilocybin is added on top of this, the combination can lead to uncontrolled neurological reactions.

In addition, lithium is often prescribed for bipolar disorder. People with this diagnosis already have an increased risk of mood dysregulation and psychotic episodes. Psychedelics are a contraindication in such cases anyway.

With Triptherapie, it is therefore recommended to taper off lithium exclusively under the supervision of a doctor, and only to consider a potential psychedelic session after a sufficiently long waiting period — during which your body has fully recovered. This is always coordinated via the intake procedure, where medication history and psychological vulnerabilities are also considered.

In short: if you use lithium, then a psychedelic session provisional not a safe option. First, the medication must be carefully tapered off and your neurochemistry restored before such an experience can even be considered.
