Is a truffle session safe?
Truffle sessions are reasonably safe, but nothing can be called 100% safe. We can only answer this question by indicating which unsafe interactions are known. Whether a truffle session is considered safe enough depends on more than just known interactions.
Let's look at the known interactions between truffles and:
Trazodone
Trazodone is an antidepressant (SNRI) that is sometimes prescribed for the treatment of depression and sleep problems. There are no known interactions between trazodone and psilocybin (the active ingredient in truffles). However, trazodone may slightly suppress the effects of psilocybin from the truffles. Otherwise, this is not expected to pose an immediate danger. Individuals who wish to avoid the interaction of this medication with a psychedelic session can discuss with their psychiatrist whether two days without using this medication is possible; it will then most likely no longer be active.
Suboxone
Combining Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) with psilocybin is generally advised against. Suboxone is a medication used in the treatment of opioid addiction. It contains buprenorphine, an opioid agonist, and naloxone, an opioid antagonist.
The use of Suboxone can reduce or even block the effects of psilocybin, because buprenorphine affects the function of opioid receptors in the brain. This can result in a diminished psychedelic experience. Moreover, combining Suboxone with psilocybin can increase the risk of side effects, such as anxiety, confusion, and paranoia. Furthermore, more research needs to be conducted into the safety of the combination.
The half-life of Suboxone varies between 24 and 60 hours. This means that after approximately 24 to 60 hours, half of the ingested dose of Suboxone has disappeared from the body. It usually takes about 5 times the half-life for a drug to be completely eliminated from the body. So, in the case of Suboxone, it can take approximately 120 to 300 hours (5-13 days) for it to completely disappear from the body. After this, a truffle session has more effect. People who use Suboxone do so for a reason, namely to treat opioid addiction. Stopping this medication can be a problem for people in recovery from addiction, as it can lead to relapse. Using truffles can reduce addiction issues for some, but there are also known cases where the use of psychedelics can lead to relapse. This must therefore also be taken into account.
Syprexa
Syprexa is an antipsychotic used for the treatment of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. There are no known interactions between Syprexa and psilocybin. However, the reason for using antipsychotics may mean that psychedelic sessions are advised against. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are, in fact, contraindications for the use of psychedelics. Although studies are currently underway to determine whether psilocybin actually increases or decreases the risk of exacerbation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, we need more clarity first.
