Is psilocybin therapy a medical treatment?

No, as of 2024, psychedelic therapy is not yet considered a medical treatment in the Netherlands. However, it is already being used in certain clinical trials for the treatment of specific mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We expect that psilocybin therapy might not fall under regular mental healthcare until 2026 or even 2027. What effect this will have on (healthcare) reimbursements from health insurers is still unclear.

As of 2025, psychedelic therapy is not yet recognized as an official medical treatment. Sessions with psilocybin, usually in the form of legal magic truffles, legally fall under alternative therapies such as coaching or talk therapy under the influence of a legal psychoactive substance. Therefore, they are not offered as a treatment with a medical claim — this is not permitted by law, and health insurers consequently do not yet offer reimbursement for them.

Triptherapie addresses this with a holistic approach in which psilocybin, often via a truffle session, is combined with guidance from therapists with a background in psychology, mental health care, or integrative therapy. This creates an effective yet legal alternative (but not a replacement) to regular psychotherapy. The sessions focus on, among other things depression, anxiety, addiction and personal development, with the aim of breaking through psychological blocks and gaining new insights.

In the long term, however, it is expected that psilocybin therapy becomes a recognized form of treatment via clinical trials. The most recent prognoses are based on 2026 or 2027 for potential medical recognition, subject to approval by authorities such as the Medicines Evaluation Board (CBG). Until then, initiatives such as Triptherapie remain important as a legal and accessible alternative.

For people with a low income, Triptherapie offers a discount scheme which can amount to up to €450. You can apply for this subsidy via the page about discount on psychedelic sessions.
