Can I use MDMA for PTSD?
Yes, MDMA can be used in the treatment of PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). Several clinical studies have shown that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy can be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, such as anxiety, re-experiencing and avoidance. During an MDMA-assisted session, patients may experience increased openness, empathy and connection, which can help them explore and process traumatic experiences. However, it is important to note that MDMA-assisted therapy should only be carried out under the guidance of a professional therapist and should not be used on one's own initiative. MDMA currently is not yet legal for therapeutic use in most countries, including the Netherlands. A legal way of using MDMA for PTSD is only possible if performed on non-medical grounds with a legal MDMA analogue.

To complement this post:
Meanwhile, the law has changed and MDMA analogues are no longer legal either. MDMA sessions (with MDMA itself or the analogues) can now only take place under harm-reduction.
The logic behind this approach is as follows:
Own responsibility: The client is himself responsible for the purchase and possession of the MDMA (according to the tolerance policy: a maximum of 1 pill or 0.5 grams is dismissed as own use).
No sale: The attendant does not sell or provide the drug to avoid prosecution for drug trafficking.
Safety: The supervisor is present to ensure physical and mental safety (tripsitting). This falls under harm reduction: it is safer to do it with accompaniment than alone.
While this route is relatively straightforward for healthy recreational users, it is a lot more complex with PTSD:
Duty of care and liability: An official therapist (BIG-registered) may not advise or supervise illegal substances outside clinical trials. For this reason, at Triptherapie you can have sessions supervised by therapists who are trained as therapists but not registered as BIG therapists. However, we do have a BIG therapist on hand for those moments when someone is no longer under the influence. This gives you more certainty of proper guidance, also afterwards if necessary.
Quality of MDMA: In harm-reduction sessions, you should have your own MDMA tested at a testing service. This reduces the risk of dangerous adulterants. If you don't do this, it is more likely that it is not pure and the session will be negatively affected.
The State Commission's opinion (2024/2025): The committee has advised the government to curb precisely this kind of "underground" or "grey area" provider. The fear is that vulnerable patients with severe PTSD will end up with unqualified counsellors, which can lead to retraumatisation. So look for counselling from a professional provider, such as Triptherapie Netherlands. Another option is to wait until MDMA therapy is recognised as a medical treatment, although this may take years.
If you want to do an MDMA session somewhere under harm-reduction, ask yourself the following critical questions:
Does the supervisor have a medical or psychological background? At Triptherapie have Ronald, Reinke and Sascha a psychological background and they are internally & externally trained to work with psychedelics.
