Can Methotrexate and ayahuasca be combined?
Methotrexate Methotrexate is an immunosuppressant that is often prescribed for the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Methotrexate works primarily by disrupting the normal metabolism of cells. It inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which in turn inhibits the synthesis of folic acid (vitamin B11). Due to folic acid depletion, (cancer/inflammatory) cells cannot replicate DNA and RNA quickly enough, and the rapid multiplication of dentin or cancer cells stops. Furthermore, a low folic acid level causes apoptosis (self-destruction) of the tumor cells.
To determine whether methotrexate can be taken together with ayahuasca, we therefore need to examine whether ayahuasca is compatible with the reduced concentration of Vitamin B11 and reduced activity of Dihydrofolate reductase, and whether the person is strong enough to use the psychedelics (they are not taking the medication for no reason).
Although it theoretically has no interaction, some doctors recommend that Methotrexate to stop a week before the use of psychedelics to which an MAO inhibitor is added, such as ayahuasca and psilohuasca. The startup would then Methotrexate can then be used again two days after use.
