Should I watch out for serotonin syndrome when using psilocybin (truffles or magic mushrooms)?
If there are no medicines or MAO inhibitors are in play, it seems that even extremely high doses of psilocybin not taking care of the serotonin syndrome. This suggests that psilocybin after conversion to the active substance psilocin has a different activity than serotonin on various serotonergic receptors, since an equal amount of serotonin would indeed cause serotonin syndrome. Increasingly, studies also show that serotonergic medication, such as antidepressants, can be combined with psilocybin, such as SSRI. In theory, psilocybin specifically does not seem to carry a very high risk of serotonin syndrome, possibly by keeping the relevant receptors occupied. For the time being, this remains a theory.
If you are considering using psilocybin and are currently taking other medications, it is still important to discuss this with a medical specialist. They can advise you on the safety of combining these substances and whether a tapering period of other medication is necessary before undergoing a psilocybin session.
