Why is the truffle ceremony only for adults and not for children?

Truffle ceremonies are intended exclusively for adults, and for good reason. Firstly, psychedelic substances such as psilocybin, which are found in truffles, are powerful substances that deeply affect consciousness and neurochemistry. In children and adolescents, the brain is still fully developing. Disrupting this development with psychedelics can have unpredictable consequences for cognitive functions, emotion regulation, and psychological stability. Moreover, scientific research into the use of psychedelics in minors is virtually absent, meaning there are no safe guidelines. The lack of research makes the outcome regarding brain development particularly uncertain, and as a precaution, its use is advised against.

In addition, a truffle ceremony requires a certain degree of self-reflection, emotional maturity, and inner stability. These are necessary to properly process and integrate the intense, introspective experience. Children often still lack the psychological frame of reference to interpret these types of experiences in a healthy way.

For the time being, we recommend applying a minimum age of 21 and allowing those 18+ to participate in a truffle ceremony in exceptional circumstances.

If you want to know more about the responsible use of truffles in adults, I recommend looking at the page about the truffle ceremony and optionally complete an intake form for personal advice.

A truffle ceremony is intended exclusively for adults, and there are clear reasons for this — both medical and ethical.

First of all, the psychedelic substances which are used during a truffle ceremony, such as psilocybin, powerful substances that deeply affect consciousness and the neurochemistry of the brain. However, the brains of children and adolescents are still fully developing. The use of psilocybin during that developmental phase can have unpredictable effects on cognitive functions, emotion processing, and psychological stability. There is currently hardly any scientific research regarding the effect of psychedelics on minors, as a result of which there are no safe guidelines for use at a young age. Therefore, for reasons of precaution and ethics, participation for children is excluded.

In addition, a truffle ceremony requires emotional maturity, self-reflection, and the ability to process intense inner experiences. These qualities are usually not yet sufficiently developed in children. A psychedelic experience can be confronting, overwhelming, or spiritually profound—something for which an adult needs guidance, preparation, and aftercare. Children often lack the psychological frame of reference to safely interpret this.

For that reason, Triptherapie recommends a minimum age of 21. In some exceptional cases, adults aged 18 and over may be admitted, provided there are no contraindications based on the intake.

If you are too young, do not take truffles because your brain is still developing. It appears that psilocybin does not have a negative effect on development, but as a precaution, it is advised against.
