What is the difference between magic mushrooms and truffles?

The main difference between magic mushrooms and truffles lies in their appearance and the concentration of active substances. Magic mushrooms have a stem and a cap, while truffles have a lumpy shape and no stem.

What is less well known is that truffles are actually the sclerotia of mushrooms. The sclerotia is a compact, spherical mass of mycelium and nutrients that forms underground in response to drought and food shortages. In a sense, truffles can be considered a survival mechanism of mushrooms.

Truffles contain the same psychoactive substances as magic mushrooms, such as psilocybin and psilocin, but in lower concentrations. Therefore, truffles are often used as a legal alternative to magic mushrooms. The effects of truffles are similar to those of magic mushrooms, but can be slightly less intense due to the lower concentration of the active substances.

Magic mushrooms and truffles both contain psilocybin and therefore produce virtually the same trip. The difference lies mainly in the form: magic mushrooms are the fruiting bodies (above ground) and have been banned in the Netherlands since 2008. Truffles are the underground sclerotia of the same fungus and are legal. In terms of effect, you will notice little difference if you dose correctly — it is mainly about set, setting, and mindset.

Magic mushrooms taste neutral to nasty, and truffles taste somewhere between nasty and gross. Aside from this, there are fewer differences when correcting for active ingredients. Some believe that truffles provide an earthy trip because they grow underground, and magic mushrooms more of a heavenly experience because they grow above ground. That difference is due to the power of suggestion.

Magic mushrooms are easier to dry, store, and eat when they are dried. Truffles become rock hard when you dry them. The nickname “philosophers' stones’ This came about because these truffles not only literally feel like small stones, but also figuratively refer to the “philosopher’s stone” from alchemy, the symbol for enlightenment, transformation, and finding deeper wisdom.
