Are MDMA therapy sessions still legal and possible in the Netherlands after the ban on analogues in 2025?
Although the supply of legal MDMA analogues has been officially banned since July 1, 2025, remains MDMA-assisted therapy possible in the Netherlands in a manner whereby the client brings the substance themselves in a limited quantity. This approach is justified under 'personal responsibility' and falls within the limits of what is legally permitted.
Personal responsibility for the substance: It is tolerated to do it yourself (maximum 500 mg) to take along, which is considered by the Public Prosecution Service as a 'small quantity for personal use'.
