ORAC

Antioxidants, and polyphenols in particular, work very well against the oxidation of body molecules because they can absorb free radicals, such as free oxygen. In doing so, the body prevents inflammation caused by oxidation (just as iron can rust). Almost all natural plant-based foods are full of polyphenols and antioxidants. The better a food is at combating free radicals, the higher the ORAC value, which stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.

An antioxidant donates a free electron to a free radical to neutralize it.

Sources of free radicals

Free radicals are produced in greater numbers due to these factors

Free radicals occur naturally in the body, especially during increased exertion, and this is not a problem. The body can handle this to a certain extent by replacing cells with new ones where necessary. However, too many free radicals in relation to antioxidants cause excessive damage. Sugar and unhealthy fats also contribute to increased oxidative stress. Damage caused by oxidation is called inflammatory damage and can lead to inflammatory or chronic diseases.

Oxidative stress caused by free radicals accounts for approximately 90% of chronic diseases.

Neutralize free radicals

Naturally, it is wise not to allow your lifestyle to generate too many free radicals. An excess of free radicals can be neutralized with a diet that provides antioxidants.

Overview of ORAC values for food

The higher the value, the higher the capacity to neutralize free radicals.
