Today I guided a special psilocybin session in Amsterdam North for a client from Saudi Arabia. This session impressively demonstrated how personal background, religion, and culture can influence the nature of a psychedelic experience — particularly the so-called peak experience, the climax of the trip in which deep insights, visions, or feelings of oneness arise. We call this the spiritual or mystical phase.

Our client — Muslim and spiritually aware — had formulated clear intentions beforehand: less fear, finding more inner peace, feeling connected to the higher self, and gaining insight into his life and choices. From the very beginning of the psilocybin taking effect, we saw a striking pattern emerge. He described it as “a repetition of geometry he knows from mosques.” Think of symmetrical patterns, star structures and fractal-like ornaments such as you often find in the Islamic architecture. The visuals seemed to emerge directly from the subconscious, acting as a bridge between his inner world and his religious and cultural frame of reference.

What followed was a peak experience that the client described as “an encounter with the essence of God, but without form — only light, love, and order”. Interestingly, this experience fits well within the mystical side of the Islam, in which the concept of Tawheed (the unity of all) takes center stage. Psilocybin can make that experience of unity temporarily palpable — free from dogma, but deeply spiritual.
