When we talk about magic truffles, there are various types, each containing different combinations of active ingredients. Some suppliers claim that one variety is better than another, or that a particular type might have a more spiritual, visual or creative effect. In reality, the effect depends on suggestion and the actual active compounds (psilocybin and psilocin). With good magic truffles, you generally get a higher concentration of active compounds if you have a stronger strain and if they are as fresh as possible. Sometimes, fresh truffles from a less potent strain can be better than older truffles from a potent strain.

What’s so good about the truffles?

What makes magic truffles special is not their taste, but their active compounds, such as psilocybin and psilocin. These produce psychedelic, spiritual and biochemical effects and, according to various scientific studies, also have therapeutic effects. After ingestion, psilocybin is converted into psilocin in the body. Among other things, psilocin binds to the 5-HT2A serotonin receptors in the brain, temporarily altering information processing. This can lead to a more intense experience of emotions, memories, creativity, connectedness and self-reflection. 

Furthermore, research shows that psilocybin temporarily alters communication between different brain networks. This can make entrenched patterns of thought less dominant, creating more space for new insights and a different way of looking at yourself and the world. This is one of the reasons why psilocybin is attracting so much scientific attention.

In addition to its direct effects on perception, psilocybin is also being studied for its influence on processes associated with healthy ageing and cell regeneration. There is evidence that psilocybin increases neuroplasticity and may also support neurogenesis, making it easier for new connections between brain cells to form. Furthermore, recent research in human cells and older mice shows that psilocin, the active metabolite of psilocybin, increases the amount of SIRT1 may increase. This enzyme plays an important role in DNA repair, protecting cells against oxidative stress and regulating TERT and telomerase, which helps to preserve telomeres for longer. As a result, treated cells appear to remain healthy for longer and are less likely to develop signs of ageing.

There are also laboratory studies suggesting that psilocybin may better protect thyroid cells against oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, which could mean these cells are less likely to be damaged. However, this research is still at an early stage and it has not yet been demonstrated that the same effect occurs in humans. Further clinical research is therefore needed before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.
