Less lectin, less fibromyalgia
By changing your diet to consume fewer lectins, fibromyalgia symptoms can decrease. Lectins are proteins found in beans, lentils, peanuts, wheat and other grains, and vegetables of the nightshade family such as bell peppers, eggplants, and potatoes.

If you are sensitive to lectins, which a lot of people are, consuming them can cause widespread, low-grade inflammation and pain such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Lectins can also contribute to autoimmune diseases, and removing them from the diet reduces autoimmune problems in many patients. Sensitivity to lectins varies greatly from person to person. Everyone can break down this protein without a problem at different maximum dosages. If intake exceeds your maximum capacity to break down lectins, lectins will start to accumulate and cause inflammation.

The best way to find out if you are consuming too many lectins is to remove lectins from your diet for a month and see how you feel. The higher-dosed lectin-containing foods you can avoid are:

  • Grains (whole grain)
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Beans
  • Soy sauce
  • Peanuts
  • Lentils
  • Peppers
  • Eggplant
  • Chickpeas
  • Dairy products

If you are not sensitive to lectins and want to avoid symptoms in the future, consume the above products in moderation and ensure you heat them thoroughly. Heating reduces the lectin content.
