Causes of migraine

Migraines do not usually have a single cause, but often a combination of causes. Everyone has others triggers of migraines and the key is to avoid them as much as possible. Common triggers for migraines are:
  • Food. Chocolate, red wine, aged cheese and nitrates in processed meats such as hot dogs and salami. For some people, gluten and dairy products can also contribute to migraines. Caffeine and dehydration are also possible triggers. In some cases, tyramine in food trigger the migraine.
  • Stress. 80% of migraineurs have stress as a trigger.
  • Sleep. Not getting enough sleep or sleeping too much can also be a trigger. Not sleeping well or changing your sleep routine can also trigger a migraine.
  • Air pressure. Even the air around you can trigger a migraine. Change in air pressure due to weather or a change in altitude can trigger migraines.

Keeping track of when you get migraines

The next time you develop a migraine, write down what you ate in the hours before it started, how well you slept the night before, and your stress levels. This will give you a better understanding of your triggers and what to avoid to lower your chances of getting a migraine.
