An MDMA session actually works on three levels simultaneously: biological (in your brain), psychological (your thoughts and emotions), and therapeutic (the guidance and integration). I will explain it step by step so that you truly understand what is happening.

What happens in your brain

MDMA causes your brain to temporarily release much more of certain substances, especially serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine.

  1. Serotonin → more calm and less anxiety

  2. Oxytocin → feeling of trust and connection

  3. Dopamine → motivation and clarity

As a result, you enter a state where you can safely look at difficult things without becoming overwhelmed. Things that are normally tense or painful suddenly feel “approachable”.

What you experience mentally

During a session, you often notice:

  1. You can talk about feelings more easily.

  2. You become less hard on yourself

  3. Memories or patterns surface without panic

  4. You feel more compassion (for yourself and others)

Many people say that for the first time they can truly look at their own lives without a filter.

How a session proceeds

A good MDMA session is not a standalone experience, but a journey:

1. Preparation
You discuss your intentions, background, and goals. This is essential, because it determines the direction of your experience.
At Triptherapie, this starts with the intake: https://triptherapie.nl/intake-triptherapie/

2. The session itself
You lie or sit in a safe, quiet environment with supervision. The MDMA starts to take effect after 30–60 minutes, and the peak lasts a few hours.
The guide helps you if necessary, but often you mostly go inside.

3. Integration (this is often underestimated)
After the session, you will process the insights and apply them in your daily life. Without this, it remains “a nice experience” instead of real change.

Why guidance is so important

On forums, you regularly see people using MDMA themselves and saying: “It felt amazing, but little changed afterwards.”
That is because:

  1. There was no clear intention

  2. There was no one who asked follow-up questions at important moments

  3. Integration was lacking

With guidance, it does not become an “experience,” but a targeted process of change.

Difference from other psychedelics

MDMA is relatively “soft” and emotionally opening. In comparison:

  1. MDMA → safe, warm, empathetic (illegal and only to be done under harm-reduction protocol)

  2. Truffles → deeper, more visual, sometimes confronting and legal

If you want to know more about that, you can also look here:psilocybin session or MDMA session.
