Magic mushroom!
When will magic mushrooms finally become legal again? In 2007, we could just buy them in smart shops! Magic mushrooms became illegal in the Netherlands in 2008 due to a number of incidents between 2006 and 2008, primarily involving tourists. Fatal accidents sometimes occurred due to irresponsible use of magic mushrooms. These incidents led to magic mushrooms now being illegal in the Netherlands. Later, the incidents turned out to be more nuanced, involving assumptions and polydrug use, but magic mushrooms remained banned.
Loophole in the mushroom law
In Dutch law, 'mushrooms' are specifically mentioned as prohibited substances, leaving magic truffles and mushroom grow kits exempt. Technically, truffles are not mushrooms, but another part of the same fungus. They grow underground and are also known as sclerotia. Although they look very different, magic mushrooms and truffles contain the same active ingredients in varying concentrations. Ingesting large quantities of truffles produces the same effects as consuming magic mushrooms.
Mushroom therapy or mushroom ceremony?
A magic mushroom ceremony has therefore now been replaced by a truffle ceremony to comply with legal requirements. Every time providers of these therapies or ceremonies mention magic mushrooms, truffles are likely being used as a legal alternative.
