Psilocybin and diabetes

There are increasing indications that psilocybin can help with diabetes. According to various studies, psilocybin can have a positive influence on the health of β-cells, which are crucial for the regulation of blood sugar levels and are therefore relevant to type II diabetes. Recent research published in the journal *Genes* has shown that psilocybin can protect the viability and function of β-cells against damage caused by high glucose and lipid conditions. This is of great importance, since the decline in β-cells leads to reduced insulin production and a deterioration of blood sugar levels.

The key findings of the study point to the agonistic effects of psilocybin on the serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors, which is comparable to the action of serotonin. This may contribute to the protection of β-cells by regulating apoptotic biomarkers and inhibiting the phosphorylation of STAT-1 and STAT-3. Furthermore, psilocybin influences genes involved in β-cell dedifferentiation, such as Pou5f1 and Nanog, suggesting that it may potentially help prevent this dedifferentiation.

Protecting β-cells is crucial for the treatment of diabetes, as these cells are responsible for the production and release of insulin. In type 1 diabetes, these cells are often attacked by the immune system, leading to a severe decrease in insulin production. The results of research into psilocybin are promising, particularly given the significant reduction in inflammatory markers such as TNF-α, IL-6, and CRP after psilocybin sessions. This could further enhance the effectiveness of psilocybin in diabetes.

In addition to research into psilocybin and diabetes, there are other therapeutic applications of psilocybin currently being investigated, such as for depression, addiction, and anxiety disorders. The combination of psilocybin with lifestyle modifications, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, can also contribute to the overall health and well-being of patients with diabetes.

There are recent studies in which psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic truffles, shows a protective effect on the β-cells of the pancreas. These cells are crucial for insulin production. In vitro research suggests that psilocybin may limit damage to these cells caused by high glucose and lipid levels (as is often the case in type 2 diabetes). In addition, anti-inflammatory and cell-protective effects were measured.

Psilocybin influences genes such as Pou5f1 and Nanog, which are involved in the so-called dedifferentiation of β-cells. This means that it may potentially slow down or limit the deterioration of insulin production in the body.

That being said: this research is still in an experimental stage (laboratory studies, not humans), and psilocybin is not a substitute for insulin or regular diabetes medication. It is also important that you, if you have diabetes and are interested in a psilocybin session, is first approved via the mandatory intake. In it, you provide your medical background, including medication use and blood sugar levels, so that a session only proceeds if it is safe.

If you are already taking diabetes medication, such as insulin or metformin, extra caution is required: the psilocybin experience can affect your appetite, blood pressure, and blood sugar regulation. Therefore, guidance and prior consultation with your treating physician are recommended.
