What is banisteriopsis?
Banisteriopsis is a genus of plants belonging to the family Malpighiaceae. The best-known variety of the Banisteriopsis plant is Banisteriopsis caapi, also known as ayahuasca or yagé. This plant is mainly found in the Amazon region of South America, especially in countries such as Brazil, Peru and Colombia.
Banisteriopsis caapi has been used for centuries by indigenous tribes in the Amazon for spiritual and healing purposes. The plant contains several psychoactive substances, including harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine. These substances have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system and can cause hallucinogenic experiences. Together with a plant containing DMT, it can ayahuasca forms familiar to us from hallucinatory trips.
