What benefits can a session with truffles (psilocybin) still have when someone is taking medication such as an SSRI, which somewhat dampens the effects of the truffles?

A truffle session in combination with an SSRI is possible without a significantly increased risk of side effects. Although combining psilocybin and SSRIs was previously discouraged due to a lack of research, it is indeed perfectly possible. The downsides of the SSRI are the dampening of the overall effects of the truffles/psilocybin and a reduced emotional response. However, the latter can actually be an advantage for some, as the trip is less of an emotional rollercoaster.

Although SSRIs partially inhibit effectiveness, psilocybin sessions can still reduce depressive symptoms, decrease the stress response, and lead to a brain with more neural connections (neuroplasticity). The image below illustrates the effects of SSRIs and psychedelics.

Although SSRIs (such as sertraline, citalopram, or fluoxetine) the effects of psilocybin can level off somewhat, there are still significant therapeutic benefits to be gained from a truffle session when you use this medication. Here are the key insights:

1. Reduction of depressive symptoms and stress reactions

Even with a flattened psychedelic experience, recent studies show that psilocybin can still be effective in alleviating depressive symptoms. The substance stimulates neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to make new connections — which promotes recovery and emotional growth, even though the subjective trip experience is somewhat less intense.

2. A milder emotional experience can actually be desirable

SSRIs often dampen the emotional charge. In a psychedelic context, this can actually be pleasant for some people. As a result, the experience becomes less intense or overwhelming, which can help them feel safer during the session. This can be particularly useful for anxiety disorders or trauma.

3. Insights are not always bound by intensity

Profound insights can also emerge during a less visual or euphoric trip. The combination of a safe setting, guidance, and a well-chosen intention means that even a more subtle experience can be very therapeutically valuable.

4. Step towards a medication-free life

For some, participation in a truffle session while they are still using SSRIs, this serves as an intermediate step towards tapering off that medication. The session can provide insight into the underlying causes of mental health issues and thus contribute to a broader recovery process.

5. Neurochemical benefits remain present

Psilocybin still increases activity on 5-HT2A receptors, despite SSRIs. As a result, processes occur that are beneficial for mood, self-reflection, and breaking ingrained patterns.
