Can MDMA be approved as a medicine for PTSD?

Update to Marcel's answer: the situation regarding MDMA as a medication for PTSD has changed dramatically in recent months.
Change 1: FDA decision (August 2024)
The FDA REJECTED the approval of MDMA as a medicine in August 2024. This was a setback, as many experts had expected it to be approved. It means that MDMA is not yet available as a medicine in the US.
Change 2: The Netherlands leads the way (2025)
While the US is hesitating, the Netherlands is actually accelerating. A State Commission (April 2025) has recommended that MDMA therapy be made available in the Netherlands soon. Dutch psychiatrists already want to start MDMA treatment for PTSD within the context of clinical trials, without waiting for official FDA approval.
Change 3: Dutch safety and effectiveness
Studies in the Netherlands have shown that approximately 500,000 Dutch people use MDMA recreationally annually, without major health risks. This provides confidence that MDMA can also have a therapeutic effect under professional supervision.
Change 4: Other countries
Canada, Switzerland, and Australia have already further developed MDMA for PTSD therapy. This demonstrates that it is possible, despite FDA reluctance.
The most likely scenario for the Netherlands: MDMA will probably become available for PTSD treatment through research and study programs around 2026-2027, parallel to or beyond the FDA.
Short version: Marcel was optimistic about the FDA in 2024, but the reality is more complicated. Nevertheless, the chances for MDMA therapy in the Netherlands are likely greater than ever.
You read more and more in newspapers and online about MDMA for PTSD. It is only a matter of time before MDMA is allowed to be used for PTSD and psilocybin for depression.
In the Netherlands, it is expected within 3 years from now. So 2026, 2027, or 2028 will be the year that it is officially possible to work with MDMA.
The chances are greater than ever! Although the FDA was negative in August 2024, we are actually seeing a lot of progress in the Netherlands. A State Commission advises introducing MDMA therapy for PTSD as soon as possible, and Dutch psychiatrists already want to start research programs. Canada, Switzerland, and Australia are also working on this, so things are moving in the right direction. It is expected that the Netherlands will make MDMA therapeutically available for PTSD around 2026-2027, with other countries potentially following.
