Can Quetiapine medication continue to be taken before a psilocybin session?
How soon can I start using the medication again?
In principle, you can resume your medication once the psilocybin has worn off. This is usually as early as the next day. However, please be aware that in some people, blood pressure may be slightly lowered after using psilocybin, and if you are taking medications that also lower blood pressure, the risk of fainting and fainting increases. Seroquel (quetiapine) can lower blood pressure. To prevent dangerously low blood pressure, it is perhaps best to wait until the second day after the psilocybin session before using quetiapine again.
The same applies to this answer: you can only make decisions about how to manage your medication in consultation with your own doctor/psychiatrist. You may, however, consult our texts for information.
Quetiapine (Seroquel) is an antipsychotic prescribed for the treatment of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In the case of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the use of psychedelic substances is discouraged. It may also be prescribed for other conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders. In the latter case, a psychedelic session with psilocybin is not excluded.
No specific studies have been conducted on the interaction between psilocybin and Quetiapine. It is possible that Quetiapine may reduce or influence the effects of psilocybin, but this has not been well investigated. This is because Quetiapine blocks activity on various dopamine and serotonin receptors, while psilocybin primarily affects serotonin receptors.
To prevent interaction with psilocybin and a reduction in its effects, it is better, if appropriate, to taper off Quetiapine and wait at least 48 hours after the last dose before having a psilocybin session.
It is always important to discuss this with your treating physician before deciding to use psilocybin if you are taking the medication Quetiapine. Your doctor can and may advise you based on your specific situation and may choose to taper off or stop your medication.
