Should you stop oxycodone before an MDMA session?

Combining oxycodone, an opioid painkiller, with MDMA can be potentially dangerous and is discouraged for various reasons. Oxycodone acts primarily on the opioid receptors in the body, while MDMA affects the serotonergic system. Although there are no direct interactions specifically studied between these two substances, there are concerns regarding the potential effects of combining opioids with serotonergic agents.
There are reports of serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition that can occur when combining serotonergic agents with other substances that affect the serotonin system. Since oxycodone can also affect mood and the central nervous system, its use is discouraged.
Furthermore, oxycodone is used for a reason, such as withdrawing from addictive substances. The use of MDMA can significantly increase the urge to addict for some people, and therefore an MDMA session is not preferred for addiction-prone individuals. A psilocybin session is considered safer and often works against addictions, which could be a better choice.
Individuals who believe they require MDMA therapy to treat PTSD or trauma should first complete their addiction treatment. Given the half-life of oxycodone, which is approximately 3 to 4 hours, it is advisable to consider stopping oxycodone use at least 24 hours before the MDMA session. This can not only increase the safety of the session but also enhance the effectiveness of the MDMA experience. However, it is crucial to always do this in consultation with a treating physician, who can assess your specific situation and medical history.
