I would like to undertake a psilocybin or LSD session aimed at achieving an emotional breakthrough, to alleviate a deep-seated sense of shame and brokenness that has held me back for as long as I can remember. Although I have already achieved a great deal through talk therapy and more experiential approaches, I believe I need this type of therapy to achieve a deeper breakthrough. How do I choose the right psychedelics?

When someone comes to us hoping for an emotional breakthrough regarding deep-seated shame, a sense of brokenness or old emotional pain, we do not simply look at which psychedelic is the most potent. Above all, we look at which substance, which setting and which form of guidance best suits that person’s goal, character and sensitivities.

In your case, we would usually tend to opt for psilocybin think of LSD, especially when it comes to a first in-depth session. Psilocybin, which we usually take in the form of legal truffles, often suits people who really want to look within, explore their emotional layers and create space for insight, healing and processing. In cases of shame and old pain, we often find that this inner process is actually more important than a very long psychedelic experience.

Why we often think of psilocybin first

Psilocybin can help to loosen entrenched patterns. People often gain greater access to feelings that are normally hidden behind control, avoidance or over-analysis. This is particularly relevant in the case of long-standing shame, as that emotion is often deeply intertwined with beliefs about yourself, such as not being good enough, rejecting yourself or feeling cut off from others.

We have found that psilocybin is a suitable first choice for many people who have already done a great deal of reflection in therapy, but feel that, on an emotional level, something has not quite been addressed or resolved. It can help not only to understand where something comes from, but also to really feel it, live through it and experience it in a different context.

When LSD might be a better fit

LSD can also be of therapeutic interest, but we usually approach it differently. LSD lasts much longer and therefore requires greater stamina, greater commitment and a greater willingness to remain in the process for an extended period. For some people, this is precisely what makes it valuable, especially if they already have experience with psychedelics and consciously choose a long, drawn-out session.

During an initial session dealing with a sensitive topic such as shame or emotional vulnerability, we often find psilocybin a more appropriate choice. Not because LSD is necessarily too intense, but because its longer duration can be more taxing for some people. In such cases, we prefer to first see how someone responds to a deep process within a slightly more compact session format.

What we base our choice on

At Triptherapie, we make that decision based on a number of factors. We consider your goal, your mental health history, any medication you may be taking, your experience with psychedelics, your susceptibility to anxiety or a loss of control, and also how well you are able to surrender to an intense inner process.

Someone who has done a lot of inner work, feels reasonably stable and is ready to really explore a deep issue may be very well suited to a psilocybin session. Someone who already has experience with classic psychedelics and consciously chooses a long session might be better suited to LSD. Someone for whom trauma, anxiety and self-protection are very much at the forefront might sometimes be better off starting with MDMA.

Our preliminary assessment of your situation

Based on what you’ve written – namely that you’ve already made significant progress with talk therapy and experiential approaches, but now feel you need a deeper breakthrough – our first thought would usually be a psilocybin session. This often suits people who no longer want merely to understand what is going on on a cognitive level, but who want to experience an emotional shift.

If the intake interview reveals that you already have a great deal of experience with psychedelics, are able to cope well with whatever arises, and have consciously chosen a much longer session, then LSD may still be suitable for you. And if your shame turns out to be primarily trauma-driven and you feel a great deal of anxiety about exploring that aspect, then MDMA also come into serious consideration.

The best next step

Ultimately, we don’t make the best choice based solely on your question, but on the basis of the online intake. We can then explore which approach, which intensity, which therapist or coach, and which setting best suits your process. We believe this personalisation is particularly important when dealing with issues such as shame and brokenness, because the right match makes a huge difference to how safely and deeply someone can truly work through their issues.
