How long does a mushroom trip last? From when are you sober enough to go grocery shopping, for example?

A mushroom trip can last between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the dosage and other factors such as the addition of (citric) acid and personal sensitivity. The first effects usually begin after about half an hour, and the peak of the trip can develop up to 1.5 hours after ingestion. After the peak comes the 'coming down' phase, during which the effects gradually subside. After a mushroom trip, you can often slowly resume normal activities, but it often takes some time to fully return to a normal state of being and thus before you can participate in traffic. This can vary from person to person, but it is advisable to have no obligations the day after the trip. However, walking to the store is often possible after about 5 to 6 hours after ingestion.

When you eat magic mushrooms or truffles, something simple yet decisive happens biochemically: psilocybin is rapidly converted into psilocin, the active substance that binds to primarily 5-HT2A serotonin receptors in your brain. This binding causes the hallucinations, altered perception, and emotional shifts.

1. Build-up phase (0–60 minutes)

After ingestion, the psilocin level in your blood rises rapidly. On an empty stomach, the peak can be reached after just 30–45 minutes. Brain activity changes significantly: there is less default mode network coordination and more crosstalk between brain regions.

2. Peak phase (1.5–3.5 hours)

This is the period of the most intense experience. Blood psilocin levels are high and receptor activation is maximal. Simultaneously, the body begins to metabolize psilocin via monoamine oxidase (MAO) and the liver enzymes (among others. UGT-glucuronidation).

3. Tapering phase (3.5–6 hours)

Psilocin levels steadily decrease because they are converted into inactive metabolites such as psilocin-O-glucuronide, which are excreted via urine. Binding to the 5-HT2A receptors decreases, reducing the visual and cognitive effects.

4. Fasting threshold (6–8 hours)

Only when the psilocin level is low enough that there is no longer significant receptor activation does your perception feel stable. half-life-concept plays a role here: psilocin has a half-life in the body of approximately 50 minutes, but because the trip is also influenced by brain plasticity processes, it takes longer before you are subjectively “sober”.

5. After-effects (up to 24 hours)

Even though the substance has largely disappeared, the brain needs to readjust to its normal activity pattern. That explains why you sometimes feel calmer, more sensitive, or mentally refreshed for hours to even a day later.

Conclusion: Grocery shopping can be done safely as soon as the tapering phase is over — usually after 8 hours. Earlier can still lead to delayed reactions, hypersensitivity to stimuli, and difficulty making choices.

For me, it often goes quite quickly, and I can function reasonably well again after 4 or 5 hours. I never drive until the next day, but I can manage to do some grocery shopping or grab something to eat after 4 hours.

On average, you can be high for up to six hours if you take magic mushrooms. To be on the safe side, you can use 8 hours (in case psilocybin breaks down slowly).
