Can you combine Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) and a psychedelic session with psilocybin (truffles)? Or do you need to taper off?

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a medication that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors and is primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight loss.

Whether it can be combined with psilocybin from truffles or magic mushrooms has the same answer as this one: Ozempic and psilocybin . There is, in fact, no direct overlap between the receptors on which both substances act. Tirzepatide affects GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which are involved in appetite regulation, gastric emptying, and blood sugar control. Psilocin, the active form of psilocybin, on the other hand, acts on serotonin receptors, particularly 5-HT2A, which are responsible for altered consciousness, sensory intensification, and emotional processing.

Therefore, there is no pharmacological interaction that constitutes a contraindication. However, there are indirect effects that you should take into account. For instance, Tirzepatide slows gastric emptying, which can lead to nausea, especially when fasting around a psychedelic session. Both substances can also suppress appetite and promote neuroplasticity (in different ways), which is beneficial for therapeutic effects but also temporarily affects metabolic balance.

For a safe combination, it is important that your facilitator is aware of your medication use. Therefore, always indicate what other medications you are taking when signing up for a psychedelic session.

In summary: Tirzepatide poses no direct impediment to psychedelic therapy.
