What is psilocybin therapy in the Netherlands?

Psilocybin therapy in the Netherlands refers to therapeutic sessions involving psilocybin. Due to current regulations, psilocybin therapy is currently conducted in two ways. Firstly, in scientific research, pure psilocybin is administered to a patient who is assisted by researchers and psychologists before, during, and after this psilocybin session. This is because an exception has been made for the use of isolated psilocybin for scientific research. For psilocybin therapy outside of scientific research, the use of pure psilocybin is not permitted, and the session is not considered a medical treatment. To still be able to offer psilocybin sessions, we are allowed to use magic truffles containing psilocybin. This arrangement is legal but is not recognized as a medical treatment.

So what is the difference between a psilocybin session and psilocybin therapy?

A psilocybin session can be done for spiritual purposes, personal growth, or for its therapeutic potential. If a psilocybin session with pure psilocybin or truffles is performed for its therapeutic nature and forms part of another form of therapy, such as psychotherapy, it is more likely to psilocybin therapy or called truffle therapy.

Different concepts that refer to the same thing

Because psilocybin is considered by many to be the active ingredient (in fact, it is psilocin) and is present in magic truffles, magic mushrooms, and psilocybin capsules, terms such as truffle session and psilocybin therapy are often confused. It is safe to say that in the Netherlands, the terms below are used interchangeably, and that, outside of research, a session with magic truffles is always meant.

Psilocybin therapy is a supervised psychological process involving psilocybin, derived from magic truffles, is used to treat psychological complaints or stimulate personal growth. It is more than just ingesting a psychedelic substance — it consists of a preparation phase, the psilocybin session itself, and a integration phase in which the insights gained are discussed and anchored in daily life. At Triptherapie, this approach is holistic: work is also done on lifestyle, neurochemistry, and mental preparation.

A psilocybin session is the central part of that therapy. During this session, you ingest psilocybin (in the form of legal truffles), usually as a tea, in a quiet and safe environment under the guidance of a professional therapist or tripsitter. The session lasts about 5 to 7 hours, depending on the dosage and individual sensitivity. The goal is to explore deeper layers of consciousness and to gain insight into repressed emotions, traumas, or patterns.

The difference therefore lies mainly in the context and structure:

  1. A psilocybin session is the experience itself, the day on which you undertake the psychedelic journey.

  2. Psilocybin therapy encompasses the entire process: from intake and preparation to guidance during the session and integration afterwards.

At Triptherapie, it is always advised to approach this as a comprehensive process, because preparation and integration are just as important as the experience itself. Good preparation increases the chance of a meaningful and safe journey, while integration ensures that insights actually lead to change.

Do you want to get started? Then fill out the intake for psilocybin therapy in. This way, it can be determined whether this form of therapy suits you and what a suitable dosage and form of guidance would be.
