With which psychedelic is the chance of synesthesia greatest?
Synesthesia, the phenomenon in which the senses become intermingled, can occur with various psychedelics. Personal susceptibility to synesthesia and the dosage of the psychedelic play a major role in whether synesthesia occurs. In general, the likelihood of synesthesia is higher with the use of LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) and psilocybin (the active substance in magic mushrooms and truffles). If we had to choose a psychedelic where this effect is strongest, it would be LSD.
LSD is known for its powerful effects on perception and can lead to intense visual and auditory hallucinations. Research has shown that LSD affects the activity of serotonin receptors in the brain, which can result in an increased likelihood of synesthetic experiences. It is not uncommon for LSD users to "hear" colors or "see" sounds, which is characteristic of synesthesia.
Psilocybin can also induce synesthesia in higher doses. During a psilocybin experience, users may experience similar sensory overlap, such as seeing colors associated with certain sounds or feeling textures related to visual stimuli. The combination of psilocybin's effects on serotonin receptors and the unique way it influences brain activity contributes to these synesthetic experiences.
With both LSD and psilocybin, it is often noted that music has the greatest influence on the visual effects. This is because the visual hallucinations often change in time with the music.
