Is it really necessary to use a psychotherapist during an LSD session or truffle ceremony? Or is tripping enough for therapy for anxiety and depression?

Whether you at a LSD session or a truffle ceremony Whether you need a psychotherapist depends on your personal situation, the nature of your complaints, and what you want to get out of the experience.

What science says

In clinical studies with psilocybin and LSD A full psychotherapeutic framework is almost always used: preparatory conversations, a guided session, and follow-up integration conversations. This is partly to ensure the safety and reliability of the results. These studies show that the combination of psychedelics and psychotherapy is effective for anxiety disorders, depression and addiction.

But it is striking that in recent research into LSD for generalized anxiety disorder even without psychotherapy Strong and long-lasting improvements were found. Especially with 100 micrograms of LSD, anxiety reduction persisted for up to 12 weeks. The substance itself sets powerful processes in motion:

  • increase of BDNF, which ensures neuroplasticity and new connections in the brain,
  • activation of the mTOR route, which stimulates recovery and growth,
  • reduction of neuroinflammation, which literally creates more peace and clarity,
  • and often a spontaneous emotional or spiritual breakthrough.
  • An change of the microbiome.

Experiences outside the clinical setting

In practice, it turns out that many people also at psychedelic sessions without a psychotherapist experience substantial improvement. A safe ceremony, an experienced tripsitter, or a guide who ensures good set & setting, can often be enough to experience profound insights and lasting change. Many participants in our ceremonies and sessions report that LSD or psilocybin helped them alleviate anxiety and depression, even without long-term therapy.

When guidance provides added value

  1. Without supervision A session can be overwhelming, especially for people with trauma or severe anxiety. This can trigger panic or lead to repression instead of processing.
  2. With guidance Safety and structure are provided by an experienced trip coach, facilitator, or ceremony leader. Breathing, music, and integration into daily life play a major role in this.
  3. With a psychotherapist can sometimes be necessary for deep-seated trauma, PTSD, or complex mental disorders. In such cases, professional aftercare helps to embed the insights into a larger healing process. Methods such as IFS, EMDR or cognitive behavioral therapy can then play an important role.

Conclusion

A psychedelic experience can in itself already therapeutic work with anxiety and depression. For many people, a well-prepared LSD session or truffle ceremony with experienced guidance is sufficient. A psychotherapist is therefore not always strictly necessary, but can have significant added value in cases of complex issues or deep trauma.

The first step to aligning this properly is filling in the intake. In this way, we explore together whether a guided psychedelic experience is sufficient for you, or whether additional psychotherapeutic support can offer you the most safety and healing.

I can imagine that it might help or hinder a few people. You wouldn't want to talk too much during your trip, would you? You can do the psychotherapy before and after your trip if necessary, so it certainly doesn't have to be during!
