I’ve got a psychedelic session coming up, but even as I prepare for it, I can already feel that there’s a lot of sadness inside me. I’m now worried that I’ll spend the whole session crying. Is this possible?
Hi Bekka,
Let me start by saying that I have never seen anyone do nothing but cry during psychedelic sessions (perhaps a lot, but not exclusively). However, it can happen that a great deal of sadness surfaces, serving the purpose of helping you come to terms with something. Sadness can therefore be very useful in letting go of something (a tear also symbolises letting go).
You often find that, after such an emotional moment, people actually experience greater calm, relief or a sense of space. Allowing yourself to feel sadness does not mean you will remain in a sad mood for the entire session. A psychedelic experience usually unfolds in waves: emotions arise, are felt and processed, after which there is often space again for other feelings, such as gratitude, love, acceptance or even joy.
Precisely because, during a guided session, you don’t have to run away from what you’re feeling, the grief can fulfil its purpose rather than becoming stuck.
A psychedelic session involving tears, laughter, fear, love and transcendence often has a better outcome than one where you don’t have a good mix of "negative" emotions and positive experiences. So let it all be there.
