Hi,
I'm someone who almost lost my complete vision after starting antidepressants (venlafaxine), and the doctor says I don't have a physical problem, it's just stress. I want to see if a trip helps, do you think it will?
My psychiatrist is okay with it.
How intense that you experienced this. Based on what is currently known scientifically, there is no evidence that a trip with psilocybin or LSD can restore almost complete vision loss after venlafaxine. This is also because your situation is not common and if it occurs at all and few people opt for psychedelic therapy. So whether a psychedelic session can actually help improve vision is anyone's guess.
There is, however, a theoretical possibility that it could help. If it is really well ruled out that there is no ophthalmic or neurological problem, and stress or a functional neurological mechanism plays a major role, then a psychedelic session could help indirectly by temporarily reducing stress, anxiety or stuck patterns. Functional vision loss does indeed exist, and is described in the literature as vision loss without appropriate organic explanation, but it should not simply be labelled as “stress” without proper neuro-ophthalmic assessment. Functional vision loss is estimated at about 5 per cent of general ophthalmology cases and up to about 12 per cent in neuro-ophthalmology clinics.
The fact that your symptoms started after venlafaxine does strike me as significant. Venlafaxine can cause eye pressure problems in rare cases, including acute chamber angle glaucoma (rapid increase in eye pressure that can lead to loss of vision). In case of eye pain, nausea, redness, halos around light or acute change in vision, medical emergency is advised. Therefore, apart from what the psychiatrist says, I would first want to be sure that an ophthalmologist or neuro-ophthalmologist has properly ruled this out. Have you already had this examined?
The theoretical reason why psilocybin or LSD could possibly do something indirect is mainly in stress reduction and neuroplasticity. There is research showing that LSD and psilocybin (psilocin) can bind directly to TrkB receptors, the receptor of BDNF, and thus BDNF-related plasticity may stimulate. This could theoretically help to repair neural connections and in breaking free from certain stress or anxiety circuits. LSD is also known to alter the activity and connectivity of the visual cortex, correlating with visual hallucinations. But that does not mean that hallucinations or a “differently functioning visual cortex” restore damaged or functionally impaired vision. That is a leap which is not impossible but one that is not yet scientifically substantiated.
Ik wouldn't expect a trip to instantly restore your vision. In theory, a session can help indirectly if stress is really a major maintaining factor, but rather through relaxation, acceptance, emotional processing and reducing tension around the symptoms. If you do consider this because your psychiatrist agrees, we can take the gamble to do a session and gauge the effect on vision.
