What are the benefits of an analogue in MDMA therapy?
The use of a MDMA analog instead of pure MDMA during therapy, Triptherapie has a number of clear advantages — both in terms of safety, effectiveness as legal scope. Below, I explain the main benefits:
Legal in the Netherlands
The biggest practical gain is that it is analog not on List I of the Opium Act state. As a result, guided MDMA-like sessions can be carried out legally, without the risk of criminal liability. Triptherapie uses this opportunity to offer clients a therapeutic experience already, even before the official legalization of MDMA therapy (expected in 2025-2026).
Equivalent or even milder effect
According to Triptherapie, the operation of the analog comes 95% corresponds to MDMA. You experience the same empathy, self-love, openness, and reduction of anxiety — but with slightly less dopamine depletion and a slightly longer operation (5 to 7 hours). This makes for a softer, calmer, and more introspective session.
Less 'Tuesday blues' and exhaustion
With MDMA, it is known that users can experience a crash for days afterward due to serotonin and dopamine depletion. The analogue used appears to be less neurotoxic to be, whereby there less recovery is needed. Many users actually feel lighter and calmer in the days after the session than with MDMA.
Better suited for therapy than for parties
Because the analogue is less stimulating and euphoric than recreational MDMA (such as XTC), it is more attuned to inner work, reflection and emotional healing. This makes it very suitable for trauma therapy, relationship therapy, and self-exploration.
Lower risk of panic or overstimulation
The milder stimulation makes the analogue more suitable for people who are sensitive to overstimulation or anxiety. The likelihood of spikes in heart rate or body temperature is lower, which contributes to a sense of safety during the session.
The MDMA analogue used by Triptherapie has been carefully chosen because of the safe action, therapeutic depth and minimal side effects. Although the exact name of the substance is not disclosed for legal reasons, we do know the following about its effects:
NeurotransmittersJust like MDMA, the analogue increases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine through release and reuptake inhibition. This results in feelings of euphoria, love, empathy, and inner peace.
Neuropeptides: It increases oxytocin, among other things, which the "plush fabric" is mentioned, and promotes feelings of connectedness.
Advantages over MDMA: Longer duration of action (5–7 hours), less dopamine depletion, and virtually no 'Tuesday slump'.
Triptherapie offers multiple applications of these analogs:
Although these analogues are almost identical in effect, there are still contraindications, such as the use of SSRIs, heart problems, susceptibility to psychosis, or pregnancy. Therefore, the intake always mandatory for participation.
The advantage of MDMA analogues being legal is now gone. As of July 1, 2025, all MDMA analogues are illegal in the Netherlands.
It is a shame that little research is being done on these legal analogues. Some work better than MDMA itself, and I think Triptherapie agrees with that.
