What is ayahuasca? How does such a ceremony work? Is ayahuasca legal in the Netherlands? What is a legal alternative with the lowest risk of side effects?

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew traditionally used by indigenous tribes in the Amazon region of South America. It is composed of the Banisteriopsis caapi plant and other plants such as chacruna, which contain dimethyltryptamine (DMTcontain. These plants are harvested, brewed, and served by indigenous shamans or healers during ceremonies. During these ceremonies, participants may vomit and experience visions that can assist them in their personal development or in finding answers to life questions. The ceremony is often surrounded by rituals and symbolic actions that strengthen the connection with the spiritual world and nature.

In the Netherlands is ayahuasca illegal. The Supreme Court has ruled that the possession and sale of ayahuasca, as well as the holding of ceremonies involving ayahuasca, are prohibited. This ban was confirmed in 2018, partly due to negative news reports about fatal incidents during or after ayahuasca ceremonies.

A legal alternative with the lowest risk of side effects is the use of psilocybin-containing truffles. Magic truffles are legal in the Netherlands and contain the same active substances as magic mushrooms, but are less risky. Psilocybin works orally and does not require MAO inhibitors, which reduces the chance of health problems. When using psilocybin-containing truffles, there is also the option to have the experience guided by a coach, which can increase the safety and effectiveness of the therapy.

Psiloflora is also an alternative to ayahuasca. It is a combination of psilocybin-containing truffles or mushrooms and the mild MAO-inhibiting flower of the passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata). This combination offers a stronger and longer psychedelic experience than psilocybin alone, with an emphasis on spiritual experiences. Psiloflora can be used for similar reasons as psilocybin, but with an additional focus on inducing a spiritual experience. It is important to note that psiloflora is only recommended for individuals with previous psychedelic experiences, due to the prolonged duration and enhanced effects.
