GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays an inhibitory role. It acts as a kind of 'brake' that reduces or inhibits neuronal activity. When GABA binds to receptors, it opens channels through which chloride ions enter the nerve cell. This causes a negative charge within the cell, which in turn reduces the likelihood of a nerve impulse.
In general, GABA has calming effects and is involved in regulating anxiety levels, promoting relaxation, and inducing sleep. A good balance between excitatory neurotransmitters (such as glutamate) and inhibitory neurotransmitters (such as GABA) is essential for healthy brain function.
What happens if there is too much glutamate present?
An imbalance between glutamate and GABA in the brain can lead to various neurological problems and disorders. Too much glutamate and/or too little GABA can lead to excessive neuronal activity, which can cause neurotoxicity.
If there is too much glutamate present or if it is not properly regulated, it can lead to excitotoxicity, where excessive stimulation of neurons causes damage and can contribute to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, strokes, or epilepsy. A GABA deficiency can also lead to excessive neuronal excitation, resulting in anxiety, insomnia, and other problems. Epileptic seizures, for example, are associated with a disturbed balance between excitation (by glutamate) and inhibition (by GABA).
Too much glutamate in the hippocampus
An excessively high level of glutamate in the hippocampus can lead to anxiety, among other things, and when using psychedelics, it can result in a bad trip. It is therefore important to check whether the glutamate and GABA balance is in order before a psychedelic session. At our psychedelic therapy It is required to complete a test so that we can assess whether GABA levels are on the low side. During the preparatory phase, we can provide tips to increase them.
