To properly explain how psychedelics, and particularly psilocybin (and thus psilocin), can help with addictions, you can use the following
Due to the effects of the psychedelic trip, a new configuration will develop in the brain. This is because stimulating the 5HT2a receptor causes more BDNF to be released. BDNF is a hormone that repairs nerve cells and allows new connections to form, which we call neurogenesis. The new configuration of the brain also means that new pathways are created in the brain. These new pathways also lead to new choices, such as quitting addictions.

The most addictive substances and activities typically affect the dopamine receptor. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in boosting the ego. Achieving personal goals, in particular, is rewarded with dopamine. It provides energy and a very good feeling. The downside, however, is that the dopamine high lasts only a very short time and you want more and more. Drugs such as cocaine, heroin, tobacco, and alcohol increase dopamine levels. Eating sugars increases dopamine levels just as cocaine does. Activities such as watching pornography, using social media, gambling, and gaming also increase dopamine. This indirectly causes you to focus increasingly on personal goals, which sometimes leads people towards loneliness (resulting in low serotonin). Loneliness leads to depressive feelings, which are then remedied by dopamine-sensitive addictions, so that the negative spiral persists.

A high dose of serotonin-like substances such as DMT or psilocin (4-HO-DMT) creates a sense of connectedness with everything and everyone. From this state, personal goals and ego gratifications, such as (smoking) addictions, seem much less important. From this perspective, a positive spiral can develop in which shared goals and connections may be perceived as more important.
At a high trip level, such as trip level 4 or 5, ego death can occur. The benefits of overcoming an addiction lie in the fact that the idea of "being an 'I'" fades. Without a sense of "I" or the "ego," one can examine, without self-protection, whether the things we inflict on the body are truly good and why they are necessary. Ultimately, our body is the temple of our existence, and why would we want to poison it to achieve personal goals or to pretend we are achieving them? Addictions are therefore cheats to make you feel supposedly good, but they do not solve underlying problems! During ego death, you may be able to solve those underlying problems, since the brain is then ultra-connected. Another benefit is that after ego death, you can feel reborn. As if a new "I" has emerged. A new beginning with healthy choices!
The first step towards a solution is realizing and accepting that an addiction exists. It is a courageous step to come out about it. Although it is scary, the reward for that courage will come later. Here at Trip Therapy, we always work without judgment. Ultimately, the circumstances are the cause of the addiction, and our collaboration with you can transform those circumstances into something beautiful!
