An old medicine reinvented

Evidence has been found that Europeans used magic mushrooms for psychedelic therapy and religious rituals as far back as 6,000 years ago. Their use was so common, in fact, that mushrooms are depicted in ancient biblical illustrations and texts in the Bible are dedicated to them.

Many biblical images featuring magic mushrooms can be found.

The oldest evidence of mushroom use in other cultures is approximately 9,000 years old.

Magic mushrooms have become illegal

Magic mushrooms have therefore ultimately become illegal after a long period of responsible use within psychedelic ceremonies. This is due to a few incidents where the setting was inappropriate or there was a mix of drugs and alcohol. This phenomenon of criminalizing the centuries-old medicine has been occurring worldwide over the past 50 years, with the United States serving as a model.

Mushrooms are making a comeback as medicine

In recent years, many studies regarding psychedelic therapy have been successfully concluded, with psilocybin therapy standing head and shoulders above the rest. Accompanying therapy offers significant potential, particularly for depression and addictions. Psilocybin therapy is essentially magic mushroom therapy or truffle therapy, as legislation prevents psilocybin from being produced synthetically. Consequently, psilocybin capsules are not (yet) available for purchase. Once even more studies yield positive results, surely governments and the pharmaceutical lobby will no longer be able to block this ancient medicine?

Current psilocybin therapy options in the Netherlands

Unfortunately, magic mushrooms are still illegal in the Netherlands. However, we can offer psilocybin therapy in the Netherlands by using magic truffles as a base. Magic truffles are legal and contain the same active ingredients as magic mushrooms. For trip therapy, the active ingredient is psilocybin, which is converted into psilocin.
