Magic mushrooms are dangerous!?

Let's start by spreading fear. People died under the influence of magic mushrooms because they jumped from buildings and out of windows. At least, that is what the media reported. Based on those incidents and the problem-exaggerating journalism of the time (2007), magic mushrooms became illegal. Magic truffles, which contain the same substances as mushrooms in a lower concentration, remained legal. In most fatal incidents, there was 'polydrug use' involved; the user was under the influence of suspected magic mushrooms in combination with alcohol or other drugs. Or there was no mushroom use involved. In that case, the person in question was experiencing psychosis.

Figures on harmfulness

None of the mushroom-related deaths reported in the media in 2007 were deemed proven to be caused by mushroom use. If we are to blame mushrooms for a moment, the average mortality due to mushroom-related use comes out to less than 1 per year. For smoking, this is approximately 20,000 deaths per year, alcohol approximately 2,000, cocaine 50, ecstasy/amphetamine 30, and medication 200,000!

Magic mushrooms are the safest drug

Magic mushrooms are not addictive

Magic mushrooms are not physically addictive. Furthermore, tolerance develops, so eating more does not work. Even using large amounts of mushrooms day after day does not work. You can only have a good trip once a week, and it is better to wait two weeks. The chance of physical harm is almost nil. The theoretical lethal dose is 1,000 times higher than the effective dose. Converted to magic mushrooms, that is 10 kg of mushrooms. That is what an average person eats in total over four days.

The real risks

The greatest danger of magic mushrooms is legislation worldwide. This is often claimed abroad. In the Netherlands, magic truffles are legal, and this is less of an issue. Furthermore, their use is not punished in the Netherlands. However, detectability through testing will not exceed a maximum of 48 hours. Most drug tests, however, will not test for magic mushrooms. This only happens in cases of intoxication (which is very difficult with mushroom use).

According to Jellinek.nl, these are the risks:

ADDICTION
The risk of addiction is low. However, habituation occurs quickly. If you use too frequently in quick succession, the effects cease to occur, and you must stop for some time to feel the effects again.
NO PHYSICAL RISKS
The physical risks of psychedelic mushrooms are negligible. Permanent organ damage has not been reported anywhere to date. The toxicity of psilocybin is very low. Estimates suggest that a lethal dose of psilocybin is at least 1,000 times the effective dose, which is a very wide safety margin.
BRAKE ON FREQUENT USE
The properties of magic mushrooms ensure that the drug does not call for repeated use. This is due to:
Rapid habituation. You quickly become accustomed to the substance. The effects then no longer occur. You must stop for some time for the effect to reappear.
The intense experience. The use of magic mushrooms is an intense experience that can last four to six hours. This is also why the substance is not used often. It is an experiment that most people do a few times. After that, use stops or is limited to just a single time.
People who are emotionally unstable or have mental health problems are at a greater risk of getting into trouble through the use of magic mushrooms. Psilocybin-containing mushrooms are toxic to children.
Mushrooms that produce hallucinogenic effects are sometimes difficult to distinguish from poisonous species. Therefore, foraging for mushrooms yourself is strongly discouraged.
Magic mushrooms can trigger psychosis in individuals susceptible to psychosis. Additionally, people who have experienced psychosis may relapse after using magic mushrooms.

Jellinek, as well as other websites and researchers, therefore estimate the risk to be very low. There is only the risk of a bad trip and in a very small group of psychosis-prone individuals, psychosis. In these individuals, psychosis will likely develop during the first years of their lives, with or without drugs. The use of magic mushrooms, truffles, marijuana, LSD, or other drugs can trigger it sooner.

Avoid the risks and use the positivity

Age.From the age of 23, the risk of psychosis is very low. This is because individuals susceptible to psychosis have reached an age at which psychosis has likely already manifested. We advise against use for those under 18. It might be possible from the age of 21.

Psychological disorders. If you are (or have been) psychotic, we advise against any substance use. You may only do so under proper supervision. In the case of schizophrenia, we currently advise against it completely.

Medication. Mushroom and/or truffle use can become unpredictable in combination with certain medications. Medications such as antipsychotics, MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, etc. With some medications, you must taper off before you can take a trip.

Setting. The setting largely determines the effect of a trip. A pleasant atmosphere and a trip coach prevent a bad trip and ensure that you are at ease and get the most out of the trip.
