Can you combine psilocybin or truffles with the medication oxycodone?
Oxycodone is an opioid painkiller that primarily acts on the opioid receptors in the body. Psilocybin, the active ingredient in truffles, primarily acts on serotonergic receptors. Therefore, no clear direct interactions through shared receptors are known between psilocybin and oxycodone. As a result, combining oxycodone with the serotonin agonist psilocybin/psilocin appears safe. Nevertheless, reports of serotonin syndrome have been made when combining oxycodone and serotonergic medication. Caution is therefore advised, as serotonin syndrome can be a life-threatening condition.
Since the half-life of oxycodone is estimated at approximately 3 to 4 hours, you might consider not taking oxycodone for a day before the psilocybin or truffle session. This means that after about 3 to 4 hours, half of the ingested oxycodone dose will have left the body. It usually takes about 5 times the half-life for a drug to be completely eliminated from the body. So, in the case of oxycodone, it can take about 15 to 20 hours for it to completely leave the body. Not taking oxycodone for a day can provide more peace of mind and safety, allowing the session to go better.
