Is psychedelic therapy always with a psychologist?
In the Netherlands, there is as yet no established definition for "psychedelic therapy'. A psychedelic session of this kind can take place without the presence of a qualified psychologist, for example with a shaman or trip sitter. Nevertheless, our customers often do look for psychedelic therapy to do this together with a therapist. However, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is always carried out with a psychotherapist. With Triptherapie, you can choose for yourself who you want to undertake psychedelic therapy with. For example, Marcel is an experienced practitioner with over 2,100 sessions under their belt, but is not a qualified therapist. Gijs, Ronald and Sascha, however, are qualified therapists/psychologists.

Psychedelic therapy does not necessarily have to be carried out with a psychologist. At Triptherapie, as a client, you actually have the freedom to choose between different practitioners — from psychologists and therapists to highly experienced trip sitters. It depends entirely on your goals, preferences and personal circumstances.
If you opt for a more clinical or psychotherapeutic approach, then practitioners such as Sascha, Ronald and Reineke a good choice. They all have a background in psychology or psychotherapy, which they combine with their knowledge of psychedelics. Their sessions are suitable for in-depth processes such as trauma integration, the treatment of depression or anxiety symptoms. This approach is similar to what is often referred to internationally as “psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy”.
Nevertheless, there are also many clients who specifically choose a counsellor without a psychology qualification, such as Marcel. He has facilitated more than 2,200 sessions and is valued for his holistic and intuitive approach, which is often of a more spiritual or energetic nature. At psychedelic therapy After all, it’s not always about talk therapy — sometimes the experience itself and the process of coming to terms with it are the most transformative.
Some participants even respond better to a trip sitter than to a psychologist. Psychologists tend to focus more on the mental and cognitive aspects, whereas an experienced trip sitter can also facilitate the magical, emotional or spiritual aspects.
Summary: You’re not obliged to have a session with a psychologist. Indeed, the strength of Triptherapie lies in the fact that you can choose what suits your journey. A psychedelic session with an experienced trip sitter can sometimes be more effective than one with a psychologist. Psychologists often focus too much on the psychological aspect and less on the magical aspect of, for example, ayahuasca or truffles. When using hallucinogenic substances, it is therefore better to have an experienced guide or trip sitter. Perhaps for MDMA sessions, a psychotherapist might be more suitable, as these tend to focus more on the cognitive aspects.
