Can psilocybin help with aplastic anaemia?
Although there are as yet no clinical studies directly linking the use of psilocybin to the treatment of aplastic anaemia, works Psilocybin may help combat DNA ageing and protect telomeres and, in theory, psilocybin from truffles or magic mushrooms might help.
Aplastic anaemia is a serious condition in which the bone marrow stops producing sufficient new blood cells. In many cases, a disrupted or damaged stem cell regeneration process plays a role. Shortened telomeres are a known risk factor, as are increased oxidative stress and DNA damage — processes on which psilocybin appears to have a positive effect, according to recent cell and mouse studies.
The study shows that psilocin, the active substance produced following the conversion of psilocybin, prolongs the lifespan of cells and reduces telomere shortening. An increase in the activity of the enzyme SIRT1 was also observed. This enzyme activates telomerase, protects telomere structures and promotes DNA repair — all of which are potentially beneficial effects in conditions such as aplastic anaemia.
It is important to note, however, that these conclusions are based on preclinical research (cell cultures and mice). For use in humans, and certainly in the case of a complex condition such as aplastic anaemia, medical supervision is essential. Psilocybin might, as a complementary approach, contribute to cell repair and general vitality, but it is not a proven treatment for this condition.
Anyone considering a psilocybin session where health goals are concerned, such as supporting stem cell regeneration or telomere protection, it is recommended that you first intake for psychedelic therapy to be completed. This will enable an assessment of whether and how a session can be conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
Until further clinical evidence is available, psilocybin should primarily be regarded as a potential aid to general cell health and the body’s ability to recover, rather than as a primary treatment for aplastic anaemia.
