What is a cocoa truffle ceremony?
During a cacao truffle ceremony, in addition to the truffles, participants also drink pure and raw cacao to enhance the heart-warming effects. This is because the compounds in cacao, when consumed in higher concentrations, can produce additional effects which are experienced somewhat more intensely under the influence of the psilocybin in the truffles.
This combination has been used for centuries in ceremonial settings: whilst truffles (psilocybin) primarily open the mind and bring about insights, cocoa opens the heart and creates a gentler, more loving experience.
The synergy between cocoa and psilocybin is due to various active compounds in raw cocoa:
Theobromine: a mild, heart-stimulating substance that dilates blood vessels and produces a warm, euphoric sensation—hence the term “heart-opener”.
MAO inhibitors: Cocoa contains natural MAO inhibitors that can slow down the breakdown of psilocin (the active form of psilocybin), which may result in a deeper and longer-lasting experience.
Tryptophan: an amino acid that your body uses to produce serotonin, which helps to promote a relaxed and positive mood.
Together, these substances create an experience that feels both mentally enlightening and emotionally connecting.
During a truffle ceremony, or even during an individual truffle session, you can choose to include cocoa in the ceremony or session. Please let us know if you’d like to do this during the week leading up to the session or ceremony, and we’ll take your preference into account. These are the effects you may experience:
The effects vary from person to person, but many participants report:
A gentle, warm sensation in the chest area
Less mental resistance and greater openness to emotional processing
A deeper connection with yourself, others and nature
A gentler, more loving tone during the psychedelic experience.
A cacao truffle ceremony can be beneficial for people who:
Seeking emotional healing or self-insight
Wanting a gentler, more heart-centred psychedelic experience
An interest in ceremonial rituals involving natural plant-based medicines
At Triptherapie, we always carry out a thorough screening of medical and psychological history to ensure the safety and effectiveness of every session. Please complete the intake form before booking a session.

Is cocoa safe to consume with truffles?
Yes, ceremonial cocoa is safe for most healthy adults. However, we do check for any medication use (e.g. MAO inhibitors, antidepressants) and heart conditions.
Does cocoa enhance the truffle experience?
Cocoa can deepen and prolong the experience through MAO inhibition and heart-opening effects, but it only makes the trip slightly more intense visually. However, the effect of the combination is often more emotional and creates a greater sense of connection.
A cacao truffle ceremony at Triptherapie is a truffle ceremony in which psilocybin truffles are consciously combined with ceremonial cacao to act as a “heart-opener” and a gentle enhancer of the experience. This combination is used in a guided, safe setting to facilitate personal growth, healing and spiritual deepening.
Within Triptherapie, a cacao truffle ceremony is essentially a standard truffle ceremony (using magic truffles) in which you choose to add cacao as an additional plant medicine. The truffles provide the psychedelic effects (psilocybin/psilocin), whilst cacao primarily opens the heart, supports the mood and slightly prolongs the experience.
Triptherapie explicitly describes cacao as a “heart-opener” that enhances feelings of connection, gentleness and emotional openness during the truffle journey. It is also noted that cacao can slightly prolong the duration of the truffle’s effects and improve one’s state of mind, making the ceremony feel warmer, more loving and more supportive.
On Tripforum, cacao is described, in the context of a ceremony, as raw, ceremonial cacao that is ritually consumed to open the heart and support self-reflection. A Q&A explains that a cacao ceremony can be a valuable complement to a truffle ceremony, partly because the effects of cacao are gentler and the transition into the psychedelic journey can feel more gradual.
The truffle element of the ceremony centres on psilocybin truffles, which are converted into psilocin in the body and activate the serotonin receptors in the brain. This leads to changes in perception, mood and consciousness, such as deep emotional processes, visual experiences, expanded awareness and possible insights into patterns, trauma or life questions.
Triptherapie emphasises that truffle ceremonies are intended for personal growth, spiritual exploration, emotional healing and trauma processing, particularly when they take place in a therapeutic or ritual setting. Compared with a pure cacao ceremony, the effects of truffles are more intense and transformative, a point which is also reflected on other websites in comparisons between cacao and truffle journeys.
Triptherapie outlines a clear process: intake, preparation, ceremony and integration. Beforehand, you discuss your intentions, any fears, your physical and mental health, and practical matters; attention is also paid to lifestyle, diet, sleep and mindset in order to optimise your neurochemical balance and the outcome of the ceremony.
During the ceremony itself, the truffle experience takes place in a safe, calming environment, with experienced trip sitters/therapists guiding the group or individual participant. Afterwards, there is time for debriefing and integration – sharing experiences, reflection and applying insights to everyday life are seen as a crucial part of the process.
Triptherapie lists several “extras” that can be added to a truffle ceremony, including cacao, blue lotus, passion flower and Banisteriopsis caapi; the aim is to deepen the psychedelic experience or guide it in a particular direction. With regard to the cacao truffle ceremony in particular, it is emphasised that cacao opens the heart, improves one’s mood and slightly prolongs the experience, meaning the ceremony is often experienced as more emotionally enriching, more connected and gentler.
Tripforum explains that incorporating a cacao ceremony can make the truffle journey feel safer and more accessible for some participants, as cacao itself has a mild, non-hallucinogenic effect. As a result, this combination may be suitable for people who do wish to engage in deep inner work, but who prefer to enter their inner world with a warm, connecting plant medicine alongside the truffles.
Tripforum states that cacao ceremonies are generally regarded as safer than truffle ceremonies, mainly because the psychoactive effects of cacao are far less intense than those of psilocybin truffles. At the same time, it is emphasised that care must also be taken with both cacao and truffles to consider physical and psychological contraindications, such as certain mental health conditions or the use of medication.
Triptherapie states that incidents associated with psilocybin use in controlled, well-supervised settings are relatively rare, but that people with, for example, a predisposition to psychosis, schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder should avoid taking psychedelic substances outside of a medical context. That is why they work with small groups, conduct extensive intake assessments and provide professional supervision – precisely to minimise the risks and to make the most of the healing and transformative potential of a cacao truffle ceremony in a safe and responsible manner.
