People are increasingly looking for alternative treatment options for ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). While classic medication such as Ritalin is often effective, it also raises concerns about side effects such as insomnia, loss of appetite, and increased heart rate. Therefore, the combination of saffron and psilocybin therapy quickly generated interest, especially among people looking for a holistic and long-term approach to ADHD symptoms.

Saffron as a natural neurotransmitter booster

Saffron, extracted from the stigmas of the Crocus sativus, has long been known as a mood enhancer. What fewer people know: it is also effective for ADHD. Recent studies show that saffron can reduce both hyperactivity and attention problems – and without the usual side effects of stimulants.

Saffron has a broad range of effects: it increases serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, inhibits inflammation in the brain, and promotes BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), essential for learning ability and neuroplasticity. This makes it suitable not only for mood and relaxation but also for cognitive functions such as focus and memory. In the post A little less depressed, angry, tired, and anxious thanks to saffron (and 12 more benefits) The role of saffron is explained in detail, including safe dosages and the additional benefits of saffron.

In some of our psychedelic programs, is saffron used as a supplement before a psilocybin session to balance neurotransmitters and stabilize mood. Saffron is also often recommended on its own in cases of (winter) depression.

Psilocybin for ADHD

Although large-scale studies are still lacking, existing research points to improvements in ADHD symptoms, particularly in adults. Through activation of the 5-HT2A receptor, psilocybin increases the release of BDNF and stimulates brain plasticity. Furthermore, it inhibits inflammatory processes that may play a role in ADHD. These mechanisms are also discussed in the article. Why combine?

Although clinical studies into the combination of saffron and psilocybin are still lacking, there is a strong scientific basis for a possible synergy based on their shared effects:

  1. Serotonergic activation: Saffron increases serotonin via reuptake inhibition; psilocybin directly stimulates the 5-HT2A receptor. This dual stimulation could create a balance between rest and motivation.

  2. Neurotransmitter diversity: Saffron influences dopamine and norepinephrine, crucial for focus; psilocybin improves emotion regulation via other brain regions. The substances complement each other.

  3. Neuroplasticity: both increase BDNF and support brain adaptation – essential in ADHD, where neural networks are often less efficient.

  4. Anti-inflammatoryChronic low-grade inflammation is increasingly linked to ADHD. Both saffron and psilocybin can address this underlying cause.

  5. Emotional balanceWhere psilocybin increases cognitive flexibility, saffron contributes to sleep and calmness. Together, they may create a balance between clarity and inner peace.
