Can Prozac and psychedelics be taken together, or do they also need to be tapered off?

Recent research shows that combining Prozac (fluoxetine) and psychedelics such as psilocybin is generally safe. However, Prozac can reduce the effects of psychedelics. It is important to know that the effects of Prozac and psychedelics can interact.

If you are currently taking Prozac and are interested in having a psychedelic session, it is advisable to seek advice from your treating physician. They can help you determine whether tapering off Prozac is necessary before undergoing a psychedelic session. It is important never to stop taking medication on your own without consulting a doctor.

It is also possible that your doctor chooses to adjust the dosage of Prozac during the period of the psychedelic session. This can help minimize the interaction between the medication and the psychedelics.

Prozac and fluoxetine belong to the SSRIs and ensure that more serotonin is available by reducing serotonin reuptake. Serotonin plays a role in emotions and moods.

Doctors prescribe it for depression and at anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also used for bulimia nervosa, for certain menstrual complaints (namely the premenstrual syndrome), bee nerve pain and with Raynaud's disease.

Classic psychedelics (including LSD, psilocybin, and DMT) work by influencing the serotonin system, and most antidepressants such as SSRIs and MAO inhibitors also work by targeting serotonin signals.

Although the combination is almost never fatal, it is still advised against combining antidepressants with psychedelics such as magic mushrooms and truffles. Users who do take SSRIs in combination with classic psychedelics report that the effect of the drugs is diminished.

However, we must warn against the following psychedelics;

Never combine Lithium with psychedelics. SSRIs or MAO inhibitors in combination with MDMA and derivatives, mescaline, ayahuasca, and ibogaine can cause serotonin syndrome or death.

See here a List of drugs and combinations that are safe or unsafe.

What we recommend is to opt for safety with 100% and try to taper off the medication in consultation with the prescribing physician. Ideally, the body should be able to produce enough serotonin itself through a healthy lifestyle.

Thanks for the quick response. If I understand correctly, the combination of mushrooms and Prozac (SSRI) is low-risk with a reduced effect on the trip. I understand that you don't want to take any risks, but I can live with a low risk and a slightly reduced effect.

We must point out the risks to you, and it is of course up to you whether or not to follow our recommendation. But how wonderful would it be if, through trip therapy—love for the mind plus a little extra love for the body—we could get off medication. After all, the best way is to taper off medication by living a healthier life.

It is your life, your choice.

Since many questions are asked via email and the forum about medication and trip therapy, I have written an article about it.

See this one here: Triptherapie and drugs or medication

SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are antidepressants that are often used in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and other mood complaints. They increase serotonin levels in the brain by blocking the reuptake of serotonin. Common SSRIs include citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Seroxat), and sertraline (Zoloft).

In combination with psychedelics such as psilocybin, MDMA, or LSD, there are important points to consider:

Until recently, the use of SSRIs was considered a contraindication for psilocybin sessions. It was thought that they would flatten the effects of psychedelics or lead to unpredictable effects. However, recent research shows that combining psilocybin with SSRIs in many cases can safely, provided there are no other health risks. However, the effects may be slightly softens are; emotions are often experienced less intensely and the psychedelic trip gets going a little slower.

In combinations with MAO inhibitors, as with ayahuasca or psilohuasca, the use of SSRIs is indeed problematic. This combination increases the risk of the dangerous serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by an excess of serotonin in the brain. Therefore, SSRIs are a absolute contraindication with ayahuasca and psilohuasca.

At Triptherapie, the use of SSRIs during a truffle ceremony no longer excluded as a standard procedure. You may choose whether to taper off the medication — in consultation with your doctor — or continue using it. The experience may, however, be somewhat flatter than in people without serotonergic medication.
