Supervised psychedelic sessions have become a serious option in recent years for people stuck in patterns, emotions or psychological symptoms. At the same time, there is a lot of difference in quality between providers. In this blog, we explain not only what a guided session entails, but also where the difference lies between average counselling and a well-constructed course like at Triptherapie.

What does a guided psychedelic session entail?

A guided psychedelic session is not an isolated experience, but part of a process. This process consists of preparation, the session itself and integration afterwards.

The setting is always focused on safety and relaxation. Think of a quiet room with a bed or comfortable chair, soft lighting and as few stimuli as possible. In many professional settings, an eye mask and music are used so that the attention can be fully inward. This is also used within scientific research, such as in studies on psilocybin, where participants are accompanied by therapists with an eye mask and music throughout the session.

Counselling begins even before the session. There is an intake that looks at your mental and physical health, medication use and intentions. During the session itself, continuous support is present to ensure safety and help you cope with difficult moments. Integration follows afterwards, where insights are discussed and translated into your daily life.

The aim of these sessions is often to break mental patterns, process emotions and gain new perspectives. Research shows that psychedelic therapy may be effective for depression and trauma, among others, although it is still in development and not a standard treatment within mainstream care.

Different forms of guided sessions

There are several forms in which psychedelic sessions are offered, and the choice affects the depth and type of process.

Individual sessions offer one-to-one counselling and are often best suited for people with specific psychological or emotional issues. Counselling is fully tailored to the individual.

Group ceremonies work with small groups in which participants go through their own process at the same time. The group dynamics can provide a sense of belonging, but require sufficient guidance for each participant.

Retreats are multi-day courses in which the psychedelic session is combined with other methods such as breath work, meditation and sometimes cold training. This creates more space for preparation and integration within one programme.

Legality and practice in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is in a unique position because psilocybin truffles are legal. As a result, guided sessions with truffles can be offered relatively freely. Other substances such as MDMA and LSD are only allowed within scientific research or under harm-reduction protocols where guided sessions are only offered as a Tripsitter.

Within hospitals such as the UMC Utrecht, studies are under way to determine whether psilocybin can help treatment-resistant depression. These studies show potential, but also stress that it is not a panacea and that counselling is essential.

Because the sector falls outside mainstream care, there is no uniform quality control. This means that providers' experience and approach can vary greatly. This is precisely why it is important to look critically at who you are counselling.

What does good coaching really make a difference?

The biggest difference between providers is not in the truffles, but in the protocol surrounding them. Without proper guidance, an experience can be confusing or even upsetting. With the right guidance, on the contrary, the same experience can be deeply healing.

Professional guidance includes:

  1. A comprehensive intake and screening
  2. Personally tailored preparation (nutrition, mindset, intention)
  3. Continuous guidance during the session
  4. Active integration afterwards

In practice, you see that providers who only facilitate the experience often have less impact than those who accompany the full journey.

Why Triptherapie stands out in this

What often comes back in discussions and experiences is that Triptherapie stands out for its combination of experience, structure and depth.

The team has collectively conducted more than 3,500 supervised sessions according to a proprietary protocol. This is exceptionally much within the Netherlands and means that there is a lot of practical experience with diverse situations and requests for help.

In addition, Triptherapie works with different types of counsellors, including therapists with psychological or psychosocial backgrounds. This allows better matching to the person and the request for help.

What is also often mentioned is the focus on the total process. Not only the session itself, but also the preparation and integration are given a lot of attention. This ties in with what research and practice also show, namely that the value of a psychedelic experience is largely determined by what you do with it after the session.

Furthermore, we work with small groups or individual sessions, ensuring sufficient personal attention. This increases safety and the likelihood of an in-depth process.

Different providers in the Netherlands

There are many providers operating in the Netherlands, ranging from spiritual ceremonies to more therapeutically oriented pathways. This means there are big differences in approach, quality and safety.

Some providers focus mainly on the experience itself, while others offer a complete path with intake, counselling and integration. It is important to understand this distinction before making a choice.

Finally

Supervised psychedelic sessions can be a powerful tool for personal growth and emotional processing. But the quality of the guidance largely determines the outcome.

A safe setting, experienced facilitators and attention to integration make the difference between an intense experience and one that actually changes something in your life.

Anyone serious about working with psychedelics would therefore do well to look not only at the session itself, but at the entire trajectory surrounding it. That is ultimately where the real value lies.

If you want professional counselling, look especially at the experience and educational background of your counsellor or therapist. At Triptherapie, that is publicly available to view via the Staff page.
